Okay, I tried. I really did. But I’m not feeling the iPad. The problem is simple: I create too much to want a consume-mostly device. I bought the external keyboard (two actually – wireless and the dock one), and they help for writing, but single-tasking blows when you’ve got to swing out, get a screen capture, edit it with your fingers, and then upload that to Flickr, and then drop that into a blog post. Just think about that. That ONE little piece of effort is annoying as all get out on an iPad. Why say more?

I TRIED

I really tried to love it. I left my laptop back in hotel rooms as I rocked the iPad-only mindset for a while. I used it as earnestly as I could. I wrote several blog posts about it. But no, I don’t like it.

EXCEPT

As a consumer, it’s pretty fun. I like the Netflix app. I like the way I can watch movies. I love the battery life. I love books on it. I’ve purchased about 20 or so from both the Kindle Store and the iBooks store. It’s great for consumption of blogs and the like.

SO STOP DROOLING

Frankly, I’m an Android guy these days. I had the Motorola Droid. I’ve moved to the HTC Incredible. I still own plenty of Apple products (it’s almost embarrassing how many laptops and Mac Minis I own – hint: more than one per household entity, adding in two cats who, no, are not allowed to touch any of them). But for me? I’m waiting for an Android tablet. I just know it’ll do more.

WHAT’S YOUR TAKE?

Did I wipe any of the drool from you? Did you cease your dreams of owning an iPad? No. You hear me. You understand what I’m saying. But the reality forcebubble is still alive and well around Apple products. You still want one. Don’t lie.

Oh, and if you’re a MICROSOFT fanboy? Let’s not kid anyone. Ballmer just said the OS on a Microsoft Tablet will be Windows 7. Origami, anyone?

Nice guest article Chris! I have to agree with you that the iPad is quite limited at the moment. I’m still hanging on to mine for those times when I want to just relax, and in the hope that iOS 4 on the iPad will help me get along with my iPhone’s bigger brother!

I sensed you didn’t get on with the iPad as much as you hoped you would. When you were over with us, you reached for your iPad, used it for few minutes then, reached for you laptop.

It has it’s uses though. And as you say, it’s great for some stuff, such as reading e-books and watching movies – the lean back stuff. But for making stuff, it just doesn’t cut it for me.

Brilliant to see you guest writing here.
