I’ve been waiting for this for a while. It’s finally happening. US film and TV rental mega-company, Netflix, are set to launch their service pre-existing in the US already to the UK and Irish Republic.
In the UK, LoveFilm is the big name and the main similar service available. LoveFilm was recently taken over by Amazon. Another big name, YouTube – who have announced they plan to release a film streaming service.
In the US, Netflix hasn’t been doing well — with a decrease in customers after its price increase of its DVD service.
Netflix made it clear they plan to introduce an identical business plan, meaning a subscription service. Usually, when a US company comes across the pond to the UK and/or Europe we pay an extra amount, essentially we don’t get a great deal on the exchange rate – think Apple.
LoveFilm has 1.4 million members around the UK already. Netflix will have to have something great in mind to have a chance of coming up against Amazon’s LoveFilm service.
Netflix plan to announce details on a launch date, and pricing early 2012.
The problem with Netflix’s demand service in the UK, especially for TV is the existing services from all 5 terrestrial channels already; BBC iPlayer, 4oD.
Rumours were spreading last month about music streaming service, Spotify offering TV/film streaming.
